TitlePlastics - Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) - Determination of glass transition temperature
ScopeThis international standard specifies a testing method for the determination of the characteristic glass transition temperatures of amorphous and semi-crystalline plastics containing amorphous regions.
CommentThis standard needs to be read in conjunction with BS EN ISO 11357-1 (Differential Scanning Calorimeter - General Principles), which specifies type of instruments, sample geometry/mass, procedures, loading details along with the reporting information. The precision for the test method is not mentioned in the standard as data was not available at time of publication. NPL managed a series of projects on Thermal Analysis (TA) for Composites in collaboration with industry. Partners included material suppliers, instrument manufacturers, end users, accreditation body and academia. Interlaboratory exercises were carried out for a selection of materials using both DSC and DMA techniques. The data generated helped derive precision statements for the technique. (for -information on the current TA studio project contact coil@npl.co.uk).

DSC was found to be more reliable for inter-site comparisons, than DMA; although both had low repeatability within a site.
