Recommended Standard
ISO/CD: 6721Part: 11Published: 2001Contact: BSI
TitlePlastics - Determination of dynamic mechanical properties - Glass transition temperature
ScopeThis international standard specifies the method for determination of the glass transition temperature (Tg) from the Dynamic Mechanical Properties measured during a linearly or step varying temperature scan. The method can be applied to unreinforced and filled polymers, adhesives and fibre reinforced plastics/composites.
CommentThis draft was the result of a Department of Trade and Industry funded studio project on Thermal Analysis managed by NPL in collaboration with partners from industry. Partners included material suppliers, instrument manufacturers, end users, accreditation body and academia. Two interlaboratory test exercises were carried out on both DMA and DSC for a selection of materials. The results helped recommend the most suitable point for specifying the Tg for tests carried by DMA/DMTA. The point of inflection in the storage modulus curve is the recommended point for specifying the Tg. The project also helped manufacture a prototype reference specimen which could be used to check the temperatures generated in the instrument as differences in temperature were found to influence the high scatter found. Part 12 of this standard is now being prepared covering calibration of the equipment used in these tests. A Measurement Good Practice Guide was produced (contact coil@npl.co.uk for more information).
